I’m back …

I’m back.

I closed up, and left Camp PedalWORKS over 2 weeks ago. It has been a big adjustment. Different bikes. Different routes. More hills. Road traffic. Stop lights. Pedestrians. TV. Wi-fi. A stark juxtaposition to the quiet, rural roads of southern Ontario, and the seclusion of the cottage.

I’ve been visiting Camp PedalWORKS for 19 years to refocus, and recharge. Over the years my stays have gotten longer. At first, they were just long weekends. Then, a few weeks at a time, maybe several times a year. And now, 3-4 month at a time. And, the training has become more focused, and more intense.

Here are the most important lessons I have learned over the years.

  1. Daily workouts of 1-2 hours are preferable to only a few longer ones.
  2. Workout intensity – hill repeats, intervals – is more important than duration.
  3. Diet is as important as training, and recovery is just as important as them both.
  4. Intermittent fasting, and fasted workouts are the fastest way to lose weight, particularly around the middle.
  5. It is more important to shed a few pounds from the body than to spend money on the lightest bike components.
  6. A clean, natural vegan diet agrees with me more than any other.
  7. Wider, softer tires are faster, more comfortable, and grip the road better.
  8. 1X drive trains are lighter, more aero, shifter better, are quieter, and require less maintenance.
  9. Training with power is more accurate than with heart rates.
  10. 1X drive trains, disc brakes, and thru axles will be standard on road bikes.
  11. Being alone for extended periods is cathartic.
  12. Squats, holding a light weight, is the most effective strengthening exercise for cyclists.

I’m sure there are other things, but these are the most profound, and they continue to shape my lifestyle. If only I had known of them when I first began cycling. I may have gotten really good 😂
